Midnight Publishing is an affordable, professional book editing and ghostwriting service based in Phoenix, Arizona (though we’ve had and currently work with clients from around the world!). Of course, our hometown of Phoenix holds a special place in our hearts, as do our local aspiring and published authors. As we’ve discussed in previous posts like this one about writers’ conferences and this one about supporting independent bookstores with fellow authors, it is so important to build an in-person “writer tribe” to hold one another accountable, commiserate together and—most importantly—create work to share with each other! In that vein, Midnight Publishing’s staff of professional editors and content writers wanted to share some of our favorite options for workshops in Phoenix, as they address two very important things: honing and bettering your craft, and meeting other writers who want to do the same! Keep these writing workshops in mind as you whittle away at that manuscript, and when it’s ready for an editor’s (or ghostwriter’s) set of eyes, get in contact with us to discuss your project or idea!

1. Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing: Piper Writers Studio

Possibly one of the more “prestigious” writing workshop offerings in the Valley, the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing at Arizona State University’s Tempe campus is set in a gorgeous, Victorian brick house that just exudes creativity and writing prowess. The Piper Writers Studio is an ever-evolving section of the program that offers semester classes on various topics such as how to write a memoir, the psychology behind crafting thrillers and a lot more. Check their website regularly or sign up for the newsletter to find out about each semester’s class offerings, and read more about their bestselling and award-winning instructors here.

2. Changing Hands Bookstore: Writers’ Workshops

Changing Hands Bookstore isn’t just an awesome local Phoenix independent bookstore—it also offers a variety of writers’ workshops and classes ranging from a ten-session series for “moms who write,” all the way to writing a story to perform on stage. With events and classes scheduled almost daily, Changing Hands Bookstore’s workshops have something for everyone. The best part is that most of them range in price from free to around $20 a class, which is extremely affordable. Sign up for the newsletter here to stay up to date on weekly events.

3. Central Phoenix Writing Workshop (Meetup Group)

Founded in 2006, this Meetup group has amassed over 2,000 local writers and poets who meet in over three workshops spread out through the Valley on different days during the week. Not only is it completely free, but these Meetup groups are fantastic ways to make writer friends, amass beta readers, receive honest critiques, and get that extra push needed to bring new content to the meetings. For an example of how a typical event goes, read this description for the Tuesday Central Phoenix Writers’ Group. Otherwise, just make a Meetup profile, pick an event to attend and show up!
