In 2009, our founder Lauren Wise felt the need to address a common discouraging issue with authors who approached her for editing. Many had experienced lackluster or disappointing results and relationships with a prior book editor or were overwhelmed on how to map out their journey into the book publishing landscape.
Midnight Publishing was born on the premise of providing authors a transparent look at the editing and publishing process, with a one-on-one, never automated author/editor relationship that ultimately makes the author a stronger writer, allowing a deep understanding of how edits strengthen their manuscript. Our priority is to create a manuscript as professional and polished as possible, while retaining our writers’ style and voice on the forefront, and to remember that sometimes editorial rules are meant to be broken. Along with a direct relationship to reliable, timely, easy-to-understand resources and professionals with industry expertise, our services also started to attract businesses looking for copyediting and copywriting to connect with their target audience by way of websites, brochures, training manuals, and more.
Based in Arizona, our writing and editing experts have provided creative, editorial, marketing, and consulting services to clients all over the United States. Collectively, we have helped craft over 10 million words and 35+ award-winning books. We’re passionate about sharing our clients’ powerful, positive stories and messages with society. We know investing in your words is not to be taken lightly, so it’s vital for us to build a relationship, keep automation out of the picture, and be available outside of regular business hours—because creativity never sleeps.

The Pros Behind the Pages
Our Founder: Lauren Wise
Lauren Wise has been a writer and editor for over 15 years. A few years after graduating from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, she established Midnight Publishing in 2009 to provide authors and businesses with reliable and professional editorial services in the struggling economy.
Lauren makes it a high priority to understand all aspects of the publishing industry and stay up-to-date on the trends, from what book genres are on the rise to the most persuasive marketing and book design techniques. She is constantly working with companies involved in all angles of the publishing industry, so she has a deep understanding not only of the editorial side, but the cover design, formatting, sales, printing, and distribution sides as well.
Currently, Lauren works as the Associate Publisher for She Writes Press and SparkPress, two indie publishers that are pioneering the path for hybrid publishing.
Loves: traveling, vinyl records, a nice glass of bourbon, the sound of piano, oil painting, music, the beach, cooking.
Favorite books: The Stand by Stephen King, The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, On Writing by Stephen King
Close to her heart: working with the homeless and veterans, reading to her nephews, supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and the feeling of a book in her hands—ironic, since she has about 400 on her shelves and she’s allergic to paper.
Our Head Editor: Ashley R. Carlson
Ashley R. Carlson grew up wanting a talking animal friend and superpowers, and when that didn’t happen, she decided to write them into existence. She lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with three (non-talking) pets and one overactive imagination. As the head editor at Midnight Publishing, she specializes in developmental and copy editing, and is also the main contributor to Midnight Publishing’s beloved blog. Her debut fantasy novel, “The Charismatics,” was the grand prize fiction winner in the 2015 SPR Awards and can be found on Amazon.
Obsessions: reading, analyzing TV shows, animals (real or imaginary), hikes that she can actually complete, and that magical act of becoming lost in a story, either a client’s or her own fiction writing.
Favorite books: The Golden Compass series by Philip Pullman, Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, The Miriam Black series by Chuck Wendig.
Close to her heart: watching her nephews grow, volunteering at local animal shelters, traveling, and finding local restaurants.
