Last week we posted our five favorite ways to stay cool this summer in Phoenix, and now we want to focus on specific events tailored for authors and readers this June and July to stay out of the heat while continuing to learn and grow as creators. June Summer Author and Reader Events
1. Plot: More Than Just a Walk in the Park
When: Saturday, June 23rd, 2018, 10:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
Where: Mesa Public Library, 64 East 1st St., Mesa, AZ 85201
What: Mesa Public Library’s writer in residence Sharon Skinner will teach this free workshop focusing on how to craft compelling plotlines that keep readers in engaged while providing a satisfying ending. Get more information here.
2. Up Close and Personal with Four of AZ’s Bestselling Authors
When: Saturday, June 30th, 2018, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Where: Serranos Mexican Food Restaurant, 141 South Arizona Ave., Chandler, AZ 85225
What: This lunch and book signing with four of Arizona’s local female authors costs $29 and includes a buffet, drinks, and goodie bags with a signed paperback and swag. Authors in attendance include Rebecca Shea, Al Jackson, JB Salsbury and Ginger Scott, and all will be available for discussion and autographs. July Summer Author and Reader Events
1. Arizona Author Series: Betsy Fahlman
When: Friday, July 6th, 2018, 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Where: Polly Rosenbaum Archive and History Building, 1901 West Madison St., Phoenix, AZ, 85009
What: This free talk by local author and ASU Professor of Art History Betsy Fahlman focuses on her book New Deal Art in Arizona, and will include an informative discussion of the West’s art history and its Native American influences, as well as Fahlman’s research process.
2. We Read YA Book Group
When: Second Wednesday of every month from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Next meeting is July 11th.
Where: Dobson Ranch Library, 2425 South Dobson Rd., Mesa, AZ 85202
What: We Read YA Book Group is a monthly Young Adult book group that is tailored for adults who enjoy YA books (according to the group’s webpage, 55 percent of YA book readers are over 18!). Previous books include Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy, and good discussion is promised for all attendees of this Mesa-based group.
3. Changing Hands Phoenix’s Third Annual Harry Potter Party
When: Saturday, July 28th, 2018, 8:00 p.m.
Where: Changing Hands Phoenix, 300 West Camelback Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85013
What: The third annual Changing Hands’ Harry Potter Party has a new theme this year: Defense Against the Dark Arts. Tickets are $10 and allow entrance to this fun event, which offers Harry Potter-themed drinks and treats (Butterbeer, cupcakes, and more), and attendees are encouraged to wear their best Harry Potter costumes. There will be O.W.L. examinations to complete, with those who successfully pass their exams receiving an exclusive collectible button.
