Besides devising a new year’s resolution to further your writing career and finish that book (read our blog on how to make it happen here), another fantastic way to marry your passion of books with giving back is through the multitude of volunteer opportunities available locally and nationwide in 2018. Whether it’s reading to shelter animals (yes, that’s a thing!), providing your writing skills for organizations in need of content creators or being mindful about your purchases and choosing items that support a good cause, there are literally dozens of ways to give back in 2018 as a writer, entrepreneur, and book lover. Below are some of Midnight Publishing’s favorites:

1. Volunteer at Your Local Library or Bookstore

If you love books and readers and desire a quiet place where you can brainstorm on your next manuscript, volunteering at a local library or bookstore is the perfect choice for you. There are over a dozen libraries in Phoenix and surrounding areas, all with various options for volunteering, including the page assistant book sorting position at Mesquite Library in Paradise Valley. Local bookshop Changing Hands also offers volunteer opportunities for setting up events and other activities—a fantastic way to meet and make connections with visiting authors who are attending for signing events!

2. Read to Shelter Animals at Arizona Animal Welfare League

As silly as it may sound, reading to animals in shelters can be an extremely therapeutic activity for the dogs, cats, and volunteers alike. Especially helpful for socializing as it allows the animal to become accustomed to your voice and presence without feeling your full attention on them, reading to shelter animals has grown in popularity in the last year. Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) is Arizona’s oldest-running no-kill animal shelter and provides a clean, supportive environment for volunteers to interact with shelter animals while they wait for their adoptive family. Find volunteer orientation information here for AAWL, and check out the post on reading to the animals here.

3. Purchase a Mon Amie Watch and Support Literacy, Education, and More

For a beautiful watch that was inspired by doing good, Mon Amie’s watches are all designed with five impactful causes in mind: opportunity, healthy food, healthcare, clean water, and education. After selecting the watch for the cause you want to support (like the Opportunity watch, which provides financial literacy to 10 women), you can track your impact on Mon Amie’s WE Charity page.

4. Look for Other Opportunities Online

There are many other options for using your writing, reading, and book-loving skills to volunteer around Arizona and across the country. Websites like VolunteerMatch.org and Idealist.org provide curated lists of local or virtual volunteer opportunities—and if you’ve ever wanted to travel outside the country, consider Worldpackers to search for international volunteer opportunities like teaching English, reading and crafts, and other options.
